married to actress LaTanya Richardson (* 1941) in 1980, both have one daughter, Zoe (* 1982)

he was raised by his grandfather, and his mother, Elizabeth Jackson...his father didn't live with the rest of the family

he grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee
